Work is underway to prepare the former Wal-Mart building known as the “Vandalia Center” for demolition at the end of this month. During committee reports at Monday night’s Vandalia City Council meeting, Mayor Rick Gottman informed the city council that work has been preparing the building for asbestos removal prior to demolition.
As Gottman stated, with asbestos removal scheduled for the middle of the month, demolition is expected to start the end of the month. The steps towards demolition come after the city has written several new code citations to the Kroenke Group, which owns the building that has sat vacant for many years.
