The Illinois Department of Public Health is warning consumers about a multi-state salmonella outbreak linked to pre-cut melons from Wal-Mart. The CDC is reporting 60 cases from five states, including six cases so far in Illinois. Public Health Director Dr. Nirav Shah says salmonella contamination can be pretty serious.
Dr. Shah says some people get diarrhea so bad they must be hospitalized. The outbreak is tied to watermelon, honeydew melon and cantaloupe from Wal-Mart that has been pre-cut and packaged individually or in fruit cups and salads.
