(Normal, IL) — A central Illinois car company that has never made a car is promising its first model by the end of the year. Local and state leaders gave Rivian Automotive millions of dollars in tax breaks to move into the old Mitsubishi Motors plant in Normal. Rivian’s CEO RJ Scaringe told reporters last week that the company hopes to have a model up and running by the end of 2018. The first model will be a pickup truck, but Scaringe said the plan is to eventually produce electric, self driving vehicles that will be part of a different kind of driving experience.
