(Undated) — A fire expert says distractions are the leading cause of holiday fires. Lisa Braxton, a Public Education Manager with the National Fire Protection Association, has some tips.
These recommendations are just a few ways to help keep your family safe as you celebrate the holidays this year. Braxton also highlighted the various risks of Christmas trees, burning candles and holiday cooking. The NFPA recommends that you water your Christmas tree daily and make sure it’s far from all heat sources. As for burning candles are concerned, they should remain at least a foot away from anything that can burn. When it comes to the holiday meal prep, the group is recommending that a three-foot safety zone is established between children or pets and the stove. Braxton said it’s important to delegate tasks and be aware of your surroundings.
