(Springfield, IL) — Jackson County, in southern Illinois is the state’s new deer hunting capitol. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources yesterday released the preliminary figures from this year’s shotgun deer season. Hunters bagged over 80 thousand deer, that’s about 500 more than last year. Hunters in Jackson County got the most, about 23 hundred. That’s nearly 200 more deer than the traditional leader, Adams County.
As for area counties, Fayette County harvested 536 deer in the second weekend for a two weekend total of 1544—which is better than last year’s total of 1501. Effingham County ended up with a two weekend total of 872, which is up from 807 one year ago. Bond County ended up with a two weekend total of 658, which is up from 579 for last year. And, Montgomery County ended up with a two weekend total of 790, up from 775 last year.
