The second firearm Deer Hunting season is underway today. And, area hunters have a little bit of catching up to do after harvest numbers were down around the area in the first season. Fayette County saw a deer harvest of 1008 in the first weekend two weeks ago. That was down from 1050 in the first season last year. The weather during the first weekend you may remember was not ideal—especially on Saturday, when we saw temperatures near 70 to start the day, then a cold front brought a severe thunderstorm thru the area, then there was even some wet snow later that afternoon. So, for the most part, hunters lost most of one day during the first season. As for other area counties, Effingham County was down from 589 last year to 580 in the first weekend this year. Montgomery County was down from 551 in the first weekend last year, to 509 this year. Bond County bucked the trend in the first weekend—they took 441 deer in the first weekend this year, compared to 390 in the first weekend last year.
