(St. Louis, MO) — Luke Weaver tossed five-and-two-thirds frames of scoreless ball to help lead the Cardinals past the Pirates 4-1 in St. Louis. Weaver also drove in the game’s first run as he picked up the win in his fourth-straight start. Jose Martinez drove in a pair of runs to pad the Cards’ lead in the fifth inning. St. Louis has won seven of its last 10. Pittsburgh starter Trevor Williams surrendered four runs over four-and-two-thirds innings to take the loss. The Pirates are on a three-game slide.
(Chicago, IL) — Ryan Braun’s two-run homer in the first inning was all the offense either team could muster as the Brewers blanked the Cubs, 2-0, in Chicago. Jimmy Nelson tossed five shutout innings and improved to 12-and-6. Corey Knebel racked up his 33rd save. The Brewers ended a three-game slide. John Lackey struck out nine over seven innings of two-run ball to take the loss for the Cubs. Chicago sits four games ahead of St. Louis and Milwaukee for first in the NL Central.
