(Chicago, IL) — State lawmakers are looking into the pros and cons of legalizing recreational marijuana in Illinois. At a hearing Thursday, testimony focused on the legal and public safety issues surrounding recreational pot. DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin testified that statistics show that decriminalizing pot would lead to more people doing harder drugs. He called it a gateway drug. But proponents of legal pot say it’s safer to regulate a drug that many people are using anyway despite it being illegal in Illinois. Further hearings are planned.
