Governor Bruce Rauner says a new immigration law will help police better focus on reducing crime in Illinois. The new “Trust” act prevents illegal immigrants from being detained by police solely because of their immigration status. Governor Rauner says that fear has prevented immigrants from reporting crimes or serving as an eyewitness. He says he consulted with law enforcement before signing the bill.
Proponents of the trust act stress that it does not turn Illinois into a sanctuary state.
