(Benton, IL) — Prosecutors in southern Illinois aren’t asking for charges against the man who allegedly sucker punched the mayor of Benton in the face. Franklin County State’s Attorney Evan Owens yesterday said he won’t file charges against Albert Smith. Benton Mayor Fred Kondritz said Smith punched him in the face while they were both in a local grocery store back in February. Smith says he’s innocent. The mayor says he wonders if the decision not to file charges is political payback for supporting the prosecutor’s opponent in the last election.
