(St. Louis, MO) — Alex Mejia went 2-for-3 with a solo homer and an RBI single for his first two big league hits and the Cardinals held off the Nationals in the ninth for a 2-1 win at Busch Stadium. Michael Wacha struck out nine over six innings of four-hit, shutout ball for his fifth win. Trevor Rosenthal gave up a run-scoring single to Stephen Drew in the ninth, but Matt Bowman came on to get the final out and earn his first save. Gio Gonzalez fanned nine over seven innings of two-hit, one-run ball to take the tough-luck loss. Washington has lost three in-a-row.
(Cincinnati, OH) — Jackson Stephens tossed five solid innings and drove in the go-ahead run as the Reds beat the Cubs 5-3 in Cincinnati. Stephens struck out eight while allowing three runs to win his major league debut. He put Cincy up for good with a two-run single in the fourth. Adam Duvall drove in a run and Raisel Iglesias came away with his 15th save. The Reds have won four-of-five. Jon Jay and Willson Contreras homered in the third to put Chicago ahead 3-0. Eddie Butler didn’t make it out of the fourth inning and fell to 4-and-3. The Cubs have lost four-of-five.
