(Chicago, IL) — Illinois House Democrats have pushed through a bill intended to make college more affordable and to keep students in Illinois. The bill provides grants of up to four-thousand-dollars to low- and middle-income students who go to an in-state college and maintain at least a “B” average. Republican State Representative Robert Pritchard says that while that sounds like a good idea, Illinois can’t afford the 400-million-dollar price tag, given the fiscal condition of the state. The bill also creates a fund to help students pay back loans at zero interest. It now moves to the Senate.
