The Kaskaskia River in Vandalia is back over flood stage. As of 10 pm last night, river’s stage was at 20.2 feet—just over 2 feet above the river’s 18 foot flood stage. The river is actually forecast to go down slightly during the day today, before jumping up to 23 feet on Friday and cresting at 27.6 feet on Saturday, before coming back down. When the river reaches a level of better than 27 feet, multiple areas of the river levee and the Diveley and Vandalia levees are overtopped and there is also flooding along 4th street in Vandalia from the town branch. The levees have been overtopped already this week and that has led to massive flooding in the fields and ditches sitting along U.S. Rout 51—with the roadway being the only dry area within sight while traveling on Route 51 to the south of Vandalia.
