The Kaskaskia River in Vandalia has fallen quite a bit over the last 12 to 18 hours. But, it’ll soon be headed back up.
As of earlier today, the Kaskaskia River in Vandalia was at 22.9 feet–still well above the river’s 18 foot flood stage but down better than 2 feet from the river’s level last night. The river has led to major flood in Vandalia at the town branch—effecting multiple homes in the town branch area on 4th and 5th streets.
But, the river won’t be going below flood stage. The National Weather Service in St. Louis says the river will drop to 18.4 feet on Thursday—but then will go back up and is now expected to crest again at 27.1 feet on Saturday. Part of the reasoning for that is we are expected 2 to 4 inches of additional rain over the next 48 hours.
