The Kaskaskia River in Vandalia is now above flood stage and is expected to get to 10 feet above flood stage on Monday. The river passed it’s 18 foot flood stage on Saturday night and will now continue to rise during the day today. The forecast is now for the river to reach a crest of 28.1 feet on Monday—that is better than 10 feet above the river’s flood stage. At that level, that would lead to flood in Vandalia off the town branch along 4th Street, St. Clair Street and in the area of Jefferson Street. That could also lead to the left bank levee just south of U.S. route 51 being overtopped. And, Route 51 overall begins to get flooded at that level. The Dively and Vandalia levees also begin to be overtopped at that point. The forecast now is for the river to reach a crest on Monday early afternoon and then slowly begin to come down, but not going below flood stage until the end of the week at the earliest.
