Two individuals were air lifted from the scene of an accident on Interstate 70 near St. Elmo this morning. Preliminary reports from the Illinois State Police indicate that the accident occurred this morning at 8:20 am at Interstate 70 westbound at milepost 75.5—which is just one half mile west of St. Elmo. Reports indicate a vehicle driven by 48 year old Sirena Cohen of Springfield, Ohio and a 14 year old female passenger from St. Louis, Missouri was traveling west bound on I-70 in the passing lane. According to a witness, the Cohen vehicle veered into the driving lane, striking an unknown truck tractor/semi trailer in the rear driver’s side of the trailer. The Cohen vehicle then went off the roadway to the left into the center median, traveling up the eastbound side of the median and back to the westbound side where it overturned and landed on its tires facing eastbound. Both Cohen and the 14 year old female passenger suffered injuries. The driver, 48 year old Sirena Cohen, was flown to Springfield Memorial Hospital and the passenger was flown to Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis.
