The Vandalia City Council acted on just three of the six new business items on its agenda at Monday night’s meeting after three of those items were tabled after discussion. The first tabled item was an ordinance amending the building permits section of the Vandalia Municipal Code. The amendment is a result of a state statute that states a permit for roofing work can only be given to and work done by a licensed roofer or the homeowner themselves can do the work themselves without having to obtain a permit. A lengthy discussion was held on the matter as clarification on the matter was discussed by alderman Andy Lester and City Attorney Ryan Connor. After much discussion, it was decided to table to matter to allow for further discussion and research into aspects of the state law and municipality permits concerning the matter.
Two other items tabled by the council on Monday concerned alcoholic beverage sales and video gaming in the city. An ordinance was presented to the council to create a Class J license that would state that only beer and wine could be sold in a licensed gaming parlor. Among the stipulations, no beer or wine in pitchers would be able to be sold and those two types of alcohol are the only that would be allowed on the premises. After a short discussion including some on the language contained in part of the ordinance that stated a Class J license must have a valid gaming license from the state. It was brought up that in order to get a video gaming license, a license for alcohol sales must be in place so some clarification was needed for the ordinance. After discussion, the agenda item concerning the ordinance creating the Class J license as well as the ordinance to change the city’s Municipal Code was tabled as well.
