(Chicago, IL) — A son of the late Senator Robert Kennedy and nephew of the late President Kennedy is setting his sights on being Governor of Illinois. In a YouTube video, Chris Kennedy, former head of the Merchandise Mart, says he’ll run as a Democrat because Illinoisans are demanding a change. In later interviews, Kennedy criticized Govenor Rauner’s handling of his office, calling him heartless and a petulant child. Rauner didn’t respond, saying he’s only concerned at this point about the budget. But Rauner’s campaign immediately slammed Kennedy in a fundraising pitch letter as a “Madigan lap dog.” Other potential Democrat challengers include J.B. Pritzker and Chicago alderman Amaya Pewar.
