Not only are tons of taxing bodies being shorted, or not being paid at all, by the State of Illinois—they are now being told they may have to give back some money. In a release from the Illinois Department of Revenue it states that a recent tax system modernization initiation at the Department of Revenue has uncovered a misallocation to the Personal Property Replacement Tax Fund that began under the Quinn Administration. And, the release says the error has resulted in overpayment of an estimated $168 million to the taxing districts that receive PPRT disbursements—and that adds up to approximately 6500 districts, including most all in Fayette County. The biggest amount owed in Fayette County is by the St. Elmo School District ($35,182.96) and the Vandalia School District ($32,957.78). Fayette County owes $23789.61, the City of Vandalia was overpaid and owes $7491.97. Among some others, the Ramsey School District owes back $6862.01, Brownstown Schools $11,118.42, the Fayette County Hospital District owes back $12,701.25, and the Vandalia Park District owes back $3613.22. All the Townships, Road and Bridge and Fire Protection Districts also owe money back, as well. IDOR Director Connie Beard says in the release “We are sensitive to the impact recouping these funds will have on some of our district districts.” “We will be working with the impacted taxing districts to establish a plan to recapture the funds over an extended period of time”
