(Washington, DC) — Illinois labor unions are cheering and Governor Rauner is booing after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled today that unions can keep collecting dues from non-members who benefit from their negotiations. On a four-to-four vote, the court upheld a California “fair share” fee imposed on public employees whose jobs are covered by collective bargaining, even if they’re not union members. Governor Rauner called it a “tragic decision … a loss for freedom of speech and freedom of political expression in the United States.” Rauner is backing a suit against such fees here in Illinois.
