The Illinois State Police Tuesday identified the driver of a semi involved in a fatal semi-bicycle accident early Monday morning just about a mile east of St. Elmo that resulted in the death of a 30-year old Altamont man. An Illinois State Police press release has identified the driver of the 2007 Volvo Truck Tractor with Semi-trailer as 31 year old Kevin A. Bagwill of Godfrey. The State Police reports show that Bagwill has been issued citations for Failure to Report Accident to Police and Leaving the Scene of an accident with injury or death. Bagwill was given a notice to appear in the matter, but Fayette County State’s Attorney Josh Morrison says the investigation into the accident does continue and says possible further charges could be pursued after he receives and reviews police and medical reports.
The accident occurred early Monday morning as 30-year old Jason Hearty of Altamont was traveling westbound on U.S. Route 40 on his bicycle about one mile east of St. Elmo when he was struck by a semi allegedly driven by Bagwill. Hearty was pronounced dead at the scene by Fayette County Coroner Bruce Bowen.
