(Springfield, IL) — A lawmaker from Evanston says she wants to legalize and regulate the use of midwives to assist in the home delivery of babies, something that’s been against the law in Illinois since 1987. State Representative Robin Gabel has been shot down in her effort before because of opposition from doctors’ groups, but Governor Rauner’s office says he would review the Home Birth Safety Act if it ever reached his desk. Nearly 30 states now allow the practice of midwifery by certified practitioners, who get fewer years of training than nurse-midwives and are not able to work in hospitals or clinics.
