(Springfield, IL) — A license plate that would raise money for the preservation of the monarch butterfly is making its way through the Illinois Legislature. Senate Bill 2882, sponsored by Senator Melinda Bush of Grayslake, is scheduled for a second reading after passing in committee on Thursday. The bill would create the Roadside Monarch Habitat Fund, which would receive money with purchases of the plate. The monarch butterfly has experienced a rapid population decline in the Midwest.
