(Springfield, IL) — President Obama’s nomination of Chicago-born Merrick Garland for the U.S. Supreme Court immediately becomes an issue in several U.S. Senate races, including the one in Illinois. Republican Mark Kirk survived a challenge from the right to win renomination and congresswoman Tammy Duckworth defeated two challengers to win the Democratic nomination. The Senate leadership has vowed to deny Garland a hearing and a confirmation vote and while Kirk has said a nominee should get a hearing, it remains to be seen how strongly he’ll buck the party leaders in a potentially tough fight against Duckworth.
