(Whiting, IN) — Oil giant BP says the Whiting, Indiana, refinery is back in full operation. This comes more than two weeks after the unexpected shutdown of one of its distillation units, just as pump prices for gasoline were starting to fall. The cut in production kept local gasoline prices high at a time when prices around the country were dropping quickly. Prices are now expected to fall across the area, though they’re still about 70-cents higher than the national average. BP’s announcement today comes one day after Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan wrote a letter to the Illinois Petroleum Council, raising the question of consumer fraud and market manipulation.
