(Springfield, IL) — Governor Rauner has vetoed a bill that was designed to help SIU’s student newspaper stay in operation. The bill would have allowed the school to bypass the standard bidding process to hire a printer for the “Daily Egyptian,” a move the school says would save money. In his veto message, Rauner praised student newspapers, but said the change SIU is seeking in how it finds a printer should also be applicable to all public universities. Another change in the vetoed bill would have allowed both students on the school’s board of trustees to cast separate votes, rather than one vote collectively.
