(Washington, DC) — U.S. Senator Mark Kirk is rebutting a “Chicago Tribune” story claiming he put his live-in caregiver on his campaign payroll, in apparent violation of election finance laws. Kirk has needed help with daily personal tasks since his stroke, but Kirk says his employment of Mervyn Fombe-Abiko follows the rules and has been approved by the Senate Ethics Committee. Kirk says he personally pays for Fombe-Abiko’s services during the morning and evening, while his work during the middle of the day doing office-related tasks for the campaign is paid for with campaign money.
