(Springfield, IL) — People who leave their pets in a car for too long during extreme weather could get in more serious trouble thanks to a new law. The legislation, sponsored by Illinois Senate President John Cullerton, expands animal cruelty laws to include if a dog or cat is left in very hot or very cold weather and is injured or dies as a result. The first offense is a misdemeanor, but a pet owner will face felony charges if it happens again. The law takes effect in January.
